Student Support

BEFORE SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Before school programs at King Open run for approximately 6 – 7 months, 2 to 3 times per week. Each session will last for forty minutes. At 8:40AM, the students will be escorted to their appropriate rooms.

Morning Math Intervention
Morning Math intervention will target students who have serious to moderate gaps in their learning. A certified math teacher will teach this before school program. This teacher will work with the Math Coach and grades-level teachers to identify the students and develop an instructional plan tailored to meet the student needs.

Extended Math
For Math students who have advance skills in grades 3 - 5 (or students who are more grounded in their mathematical thinking) who could benefit from being in a more accelerated Math class, our goal is to provide additional math instruction at least 1 time per week. The Math Support Teacher working with the Math Coach, grade-level teams and school principal will select and schedule a time for the students in this class.

Morning Leveled Literacy Intervention
Leveled Literacy Intervention, designed and written by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, is a short-term intervention designed to help younger children (grades K, 1, 2, and 3) who need extra help reading on grade level. Using a structured framework, the teacher provides small group lessons that include reading, writing, and phonics/word study. The texts are sequenced to build strategic actions across time.

The early literacy interventionist or other specially trained teacher works with up to three children at a time for thirty minutes, for fourteen to eighteen weeks. Based on student progress and specific needs, students may be regrouped to provide a more specific focus or additional time in intervention. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 who have wide gaps in their learning could benefit from additional support before school at least two – 3 times per week.

Writing Intervention
This morning program will specifically target students who need extra help collecting information, organizing their thoughts and constructing a well written response that answers a specific MCAS related open response and /or short answer questions.
