Mathematics

Instructional expectations for mathematics at the King Open School emphasize the following:

  • Clearly written goals for each lesson
  • Launch, Explore, and Summarize lesson structure (see Addendum)
  • Check for understanding
  • Feedback to students

Mathematics instruction is based on implementation of effective standards-based curricula that is differentiated to meet the needs of all students.

grade1_math.jpgThe core curriculum for math instruction in Grades K-5 is TERC Investigations. Additional resources are utilized to ensure students have the opportunity to learn and master the content in the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics. Intervention resources for students who need support are based on Assessing Number Concepts/Developing Number Concepts by Kathy Richardson.

Math instruction includes the effective use of assessments, including district assessments that predict student achievement on the MCAS and other forms of assessment that improve teaching and learning.

All classes should meet the minimum daily number of hours of math instruction for each grade level, as outlined below:

  • Kindergarten (using Investigations): 45 minutes per day
  • Grades 1 – 5 (using Investigations): 70 minutes per day

The King Open School developed a Math Vision Statement which was unanimously adopted on October 12, 2012.

Additional resources for math instruction are available on the Math Department website.
