Charles R. Smith Visits King Open for National Poetry Month

On April 26, poet/photographer Charles R. Smith, Jr. wowed King Open with his words, his world travel - and his handstands! Charles gave three high-energy presentations about writing, traveling, physical fitness, and “getting comfortable being uncomfortable.” Charles first visited King Open in 2009 and has since published biographies, poetry, and books on little-known Black History. His new fan club followed him to the library for photos!

Charles’ visit coincided with Character Day. Charles performed for us while we emulated our favorite turtles, pigeons, paper bag princesses, and Hogwarts students. It was a joyful and thought-provoking day we won’t soon forget!

Thanks to Friends of King Open, the CPS Library Department, and all of you Book Fair shoppers for funding Charles’ visit!
