ROARDear KO Families,

The King Open has adopted the acronym R.O.A.R to represent the four school wide expectations that now serve as the overarching expectations for the entire community.  The acronym R.O.A.R. represents the following:

Be RESPECTFUL and kind
Be OPEN
Be an ACTIVE learner
Be RESPONSIBLE

The acronym R.O.A.R. surfaced naturally through a series of discussions with students and staff.  The entire faculty adopted R.O.A.R. as the KO community acronym on Tuesday, August 27, 2014.  To bring vitality to these expectations, Kim (K4 Teacher) painted the murals that you see on the walls in the main lobby and breezeway.  Kelly (K – 5 Art Teacher) created the King Open Expectations Mural that is now attached to the bulletin board in the main lobby next to the main office.  Students in grades K – 5, created this mural during Art class over a period of approximately 3 weeks.  It is a wonderful representation of our students’ creativity.  If you have not had the opportunity to look at this mural, I encourage you to do so.  Classroom teachers have also spent a great deal of time acclimating students to R.O.A.R. and the more specific expectations that accompany them.  As you walk through the school corridors, please take a moment to view some of the displays outside of your child’s classroom.  The expectations that accompany R.O.A.R. are global expectations that apply to all areas of the building and on the playground.  Please visit the King Open website to view these expectations.

On Thursday, October 2, 2014, the King Open community had its first student assembly to celebrate and launch our new expectations.  This assembly was filled with singing and presentations from grade level classes.  Our students cheered and applauded each other.  Two of our students lead the song “Roar” by American recording artist Katy Perry.  The song “Roar” has now become one of our theme songs.  The assembly was awesome!

The King Open Expectations Mural in the main lobby has now become the Social Contract of the school community.  As a symbolic representation of each student’s commitment to R.O.A.R., every classroom was given an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper.  The fingerprint of every student in each classroom was imprinted on this document using colorful ink.  Each classroom has a fingerprint document that is now attached to this social contract.

We need your help in helping our students internalize R.O.A.R and the global expectations that accompany them.  These expectations are in place to ensure that our school is a safe and orderly learning community.  Please review these expectations with your child.  KO staff will reinforce these expectations daily.

In closing, if you have any ideas about how to bring more vitality to R.O.A.R., please let me know.  You may either email me or leave a note in my mailbox.  As always, thank you for your continued support and remember, King Open R.O.A.R.S!

Yours,

Darrell Williams
