The ELL MCAS Tutorial at the King Open School is an Enrichment
Academic Program for LEP and FLEP students, Limited English Proficiency
and Formerly Limited English Proficiency respectively. The Tutorial’s
targeted student population is in the process of fully acquiring the
English language as well as learning the complex Middle School Curricula
at the Upper Grade levels (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade). Therefore the
Tutorial is committed to improving students’ academic performance by
providing necessary extra support in test taking strategies, and content
language development in Math, English Language Arts, and Science.
The Tutorial’s Syllabus follows the Massachusetts Frameworks for the
content areas specified above. Some of the tests taking strategies
practiced across the content areas in the enrichment classes are:
- Language Strategies: Solving unfamiliar vocabulary,
identifying key words in questions, using cognates, recycling words and
expressions from texts and questions.
- Writing Strategies: Format guidelines for short and
open-response questions, using the text as a source for writing with
expanded vocabulary, sentence starters, selecting the appropriate
graphic organizer to take notes.
- Reading Comprehension Strategies: Looking for
required information in the text, identifying topic sentences and main
idea, note taking, identifying linguistic features that introduce
conflicting points of view, summary and conclusion.
