- A sense that they are valued members of a diverse learning community
- Intellectual, academic, and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge about the social and natural world
- Respect for and friendship with others
- A sense of fairness, social justice, and equity
The curriculum combines:

The Teaching philosophy emphasizes:
- Rich interactions and discussion between teachers and students
- Topics and activities that are meaningful to children and adolescents
- Respect for students’ background knowledge, interests, and skills
- Differentiated instruction to build on the individual strengths of each student
- Family participation and involvement
There are two parallel programs
at King Open--the regular King Open program (4 strands) and Olá, a
two-way Portuguese-English bilingual immersion program (1 strand):
- Students in both programs are “King Open students.”
- Both programs follow the same basic curriculum and teachers from both programs work together as a single faculty.
- Olá and regular King Open students have separate academic classes but are together for some activities during the day.
- Although students in both programs are King Open students, parents
interested in the Olá program must enroll their children in “Olá,” as
opposed to “King Open” (the regular program only).
