The Mission of EVERYBODY WINS! METRO BOSTON (EWMB)
is to increase children’s prospects for success in school and in life
through one-to-one reading experiences with caring adults. Everybody
Wins! Metro Boston’s signature program is known as POWER LUNCH. This is a
regional affiliate of the national non-profit literacy organization
Everybody Wins!, founded in New York in 1991. EWMB was established in
2002 to bring POWER LUNCH to children in the communities of greater
Boston. The King Open School has been a POWER LUNCH participant since
the fall of 2008.
Everybody Wins! POWER LUNCH Program matches
READING MENTORS from local businesses (currently: Biogen Idec, Gentle
Giant, CDM Smith, Blackbaud, Riverside Boating) with elementary school
children in grades 1 – 4. Once a week, these reading partners enjoy
conversation and books together at the school, during the student’s
lunch period. The adult reads a book aloud, while the student listens
and eats lunch. The children are referred by the classroom teacher and,
with parent permission, begin a year- long commitment to the POWER
LUNCH Read-Aloud Program. The students and their Mentors are supervised
by an Everybody Wins! School Coordinator who arranges the reading
spaces, supports book selection, and coordinates the daily schedule, as
well as serving as a liaison between the classroom teacher, the student,
and the Mentor.
POWER LUNCH Mentors currently number 80 and
read to 63 students in grades 1 – 4. Several of the students have two
alternating Mentors. The program meets from 11:30AM - 12Noon and 12:30 -
1PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from mid-October until early
June. The POWER LUNCH year culminates in June with an End of the Year
Celebration for all students, their families, staff/administration, and
the Mentors.
